Area woman wins $1 million prize

CHICOPEE — For Eva Lecuyer of Granby, a retired grandmother who still works part time, life will go on as usual, even though she has laid claim to $1 million.

Lecuyer went to Massachusetts State Lottery headquarters in Braintree Oct. 10 to claim her $1 million — $50,000 over the next 20 years — as an instant ticket winner in the $1 Million Windfall game.

A spokesman for the Lottery said the $5 ticket matches 10 numbers to four winning numbers. Match any of the 10 numbers to the winning numbers and win the prize indicated, in this case $1 million.

Lecuyer purchased the winning scratch ticket at the Liquorshed, 1345 Burnett Road.

Richard Manning, the store's manager, said it's the first winner the store has had since new owners took over in January.

"I worked at another store for 27 years and sold tons of tickets," Manning added, "and here I am 10 months into a new operation and we have a big winner, so there you go."

The Liquorshed will receive $10,000 from the Lottery for selling the winning ticket.

Lecuyer said she didn't tell too many people about her win. "I do everything the same," she said.

"I'm retired, but I'm still working, part time," she said. "Everything is as normal, the same as before," Lecuyer said.

Lecuyer said she buys tickets regularly, and the most she'd ever won was $500. She said she was "really amazed" when she scratched off her latest win.

Lecuyer took home her first check for $33,750, the amount paid out after taxes. "I gave the first (check) to my kids and grandkids. The next one I may invest," she said.

A widow, Lecuyer said the win provides a level of security for her and her family.
